Job Summary
As a Mechanic Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of the Assistant Manager, qualified mechanics, and instructors to learn and demonstrate knowledge and skills in vehicle maintenance. This includes diagnosing malfunctions, preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various types of transit equipment in the maintenance shop and in the field. The Mechanic Apprentice program is governed by the Standards of Apprenticeship adopted by the Community Transit/IAM Apprenticeship Committee.
Essential Duties
Job Duties
Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in hybrid and diesel- powered buses and other heavy motorized mechanical equipment Operate and maintain electronic diagnostic and related equipment, including computer programs and scanning tools. Diagnose, dismantle, repair, and overhaul all types of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, automatic transmissions, differentials, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic systems. Operation of vehicles is required. Perform wheel alignments, adjust and repair brakes, pumps, starters, injectors, lights, steering gears, generators and air conditioning systems. Install, maintain and repair a variety of auxiliary systems, equipment and electronics including fare collection, communication and related components. Operate hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, cranes, diagnostic computers and software. Document work done, material used and how time is spent on appropriate forms. Perform general cleaning work in the garage and other related work as required. Assist in chaining vehicles.

Working Conditions
Work in performed both in the shop and in the field. Duties require lifting, pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects and equipment. Also may require climbing, kneeling, reaching, and standing to access equipment and perform repairs. Repetitive motions with hand or power tools may also be required. Due to the nature of the duties, you may also be exposed to automotive fumes, odors, and dust, and may need to complete tasks in noisy environments and varying weather conditions.
Other: This position is considered safety-sensitive under the U.S. Department of Transportation and is subject to drug and alcohol testing under both DOT and Community Transit authority.
